When you think about heart health, your mind probably jumps to diet, exercise, and managing stress. But did you know that the health of your gums may also play a critical role in protecting your heart?

Growing research suggests a strong connection between periodontal disease (gum disease) and an increased risk of heart disease. Understanding this link could help you take steps to protect both your smile and your cardiovascular health.

The Connection: How Gum Disease Affects Your Heart

Gum disease is a chronic inflammatory condition caused by harmful bacteria that build up along the gumline. When left untreated, these bacteria can cause your gums to become inflamed, bleed, and eventually lead to bone and tooth loss.

But the effects don’t stop in your mouth.

The bacteria and inflammatory markers from gum disease can enter your bloodstream, traveling throughout your body—including to your heart. This process can trigger inflammation in the blood vessels, increasing the risk of:

  • Atherosclerosis (narrowing of the arteries)

  • Heart attacks

  • Stroke

  • High blood pressure

Several studies have found that people with moderate to severe periodontal disease are more likely to develop heart disease than those with healthy gums.

Warning Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore

If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s time to see a periodontist:

  • Persistent bad breath

  • Bleeding gums during brushing or flossing

  • Red, swollen, or tender gums

  • Receding gumlines

  • Loose teeth

Early intervention can help reduce inflammation, control bacterial spread, and potentially lower your risk for heart-related complications.

Who’s Most at Risk?

Some individuals may be at even higher risk of heart problems from gum disease, including:

  • People with existing heart conditions

  • Those with diabetes

  • Individuals who smoke

  • People with poor oral hygiene habits

  • Patients with a family history of heart disease

If you fall into any of these categories, maintaining excellent gum health should be a top priority.

How Periodontal Treatment Can Help Protect Your Heart

Periodontal treatment focuses on reducing infection and inflammation in your gums. Common treatments include:

  • Deep cleanings (scaling and root planing)

  • Laser therapy

  • Antibacterial rinses or medications

  • Ongoing periodontal maintenance

By controlling gum disease, you may also reduce the systemic inflammation linked to heart issues.
