The labial frenum is the small fold of tissue that connects the inside of your child’s upper lip to the gums above their front teeth. In most cases, it’s a normal part of the mouth and doesn’t cause any issues. However, in some children, the frenum may be too thick, tight, or extend too far down — which can lead to problems like:

  • A gap between the upper front teeth

  • Difficulty brushing or maintaining good oral hygiene

  • Discomfort with lip movement or speech

  • Gum recession from constant tension

When these issues occur, a frenectomy — a quick and simple procedure to release or remove the frenum — may be recommended by your dentist/periodontist.

Frenectomies are safe and typically performed with a laser or minor surgical technique. Recovery is fast, and it can greatly improve your child’s comfort, smile, and oral health.

If you notice a persistent gap, gum irritation, or concerns with your child’s lip movement, speak with your dental professional to see if a frenectomy might be beneficial. Early evaluation can make a big difference!
